Programma

This is a highly personal, immensely practical session - delivered by an ex-Magic Circle (and current practising) lawyer - designed to equip you with the professional skills and insider insights needed to effectively navigate a corporate environment as an intern, a paralegal, or a trainee solicitor.

In particular, we'll be covering:

Practical career administration (e.g. choosing which team to sit in, dealing with time recording, secondments and qualification etc.)
Interacting effectively with colleagues and supervisors
Handling appraisals and feedback
Time management techniques
How to take instructions and ask the right questions
How to approach new legal tasks
Key professional legal skills
Microsoft Office tips and tricks

There will also be time for an in-depth Q&A, where you’ll be able to ask Jake Schogger about the good, the bad and the ugly!

James Richardson

James is a highly experienced solicitor and author. He trained and qualified at major transatlantic firm Hogan Lovells. After a few years in their Commercial Litigation and Insurance team, James moved to the City to work as an underwriter on M&A deals. James also founded and ran Law Answered for a decade, where he wrote or co-wrote 42 different books for law students across the spectrum of graduate and postgraduate law courses. He now is Head of Legal, Risk and Compliance at a motor insurtech scaleup called Cuvva, which he joined as first in-house counsel shortly after their Series A fundraise.

Jake Schogger

Jake Schogger is a qualified lawyer, best-selling author, career coach, entrepreneur, copywriter and consultant. He is the founder and CEO of City Career Series, a publishing company that has sold ~50,000 handbooks designed to help students secure City careers, including the best-selling Training Contract Handbook and critically acclaimed Commercial Law Handbook.

He also founded the Commercial Law Academy, a comprehensive e-learning platform for aspiring commercial lawyers, complete with hundreds of videos, articles, interactive quizzes, flow charts and downloadable e-guides.

He trained at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP and now acts as a legal adviser to start-ups and scale-ups, whilst also working as a career coach and delivering career-related presentations at universities across the UK. He also works with technology start-ups and runs a variety of his own businesses, including a creative/commercial consultancy.
